By the Founder of PawSafe Nights
People ask me all the time — “Do you really walk all six dogs every day?” And my answer is always the same: yes. Every single day. Rain, shine, or midnight.
It’s not a chore. It’s a ritual. And I believe it’s the single most important thing I do for the health and longevity of my girls’ lives.
The Science Is Clear
Regular daily walks for dogs aren’t just about exercise. Research shows that consistent daily walks help regulate a dog’s weight, improve cardiovascular health, support joint mobility as they age, and dramatically reduce anxiety and destructive behavior. Dogs who walk daily simply live better lives.
For my girls — Luna, Bella, Daisy, Rosie, Stella and Honey — the walk is the highlight of their day. I can see it in how they wait by the door. How their tails go before I even grab the leash.
Why We Walk at Night
I started walking at night because it’s cooler, quieter, and honestly more peaceful. No traffic, no distractions, just me and six very happy girls taking over the neighborhood streets under the stars.
But night walking comes with real safety challenges. Cars don’t see you. Cyclists come out of nowhere. And with six dark-coated dogs, we were practically invisible in the dark.
That’s what led me to create PawSafe Nights — because I needed gear that would make my girls visible, safe, and comfortable on every single walk.
5 Tips for Safe Night Walking with Your Dogs
- Always use reflective gear — harnesses, collars, and leashes with real retroreflective material (look for 3M™ Scotchlite).
- Bring water — a collapsible bowl clipped to your leash means your dog stays hydrated on any walk.
- Stick to routes you know — familiar ground means fewer surprises in the dark.
- Walk facing traffic — so you can see headlights coming toward you.
- Make it a routine — dogs thrive on consistency. Same time every day means a calmer, happier dog.
Your dogs are counting on you. Every walk is an investment in their health, their happiness, and their years with you. Don’t skip it. 🐾🌙
